…well this was certainly an entertaining turn of events at the SXSW Saturday Keynote – Mark Zuckerberg. In defense of Sarah Lacy, I think she was a good bookend to Zuckerberg who can often be like listening to nails on a chalkboard during interviews when asked difficult questions. Sarahs huge mistake was baiting and responding too much to a rebellious crowd. She came off as awfully immature, but you know, she’ll learn from this and be better at what she does for it.

Some people just can’t help but respond to negative reactions in an equally negative way. This actually reminds me of the Dina anchor person (was it?) who recently responded in a negative manner when told of her striking resemblance to the Sunshine Girl. I can’t exactly remember the details. But what do you do when faced with a rebellious crowd? How do you win them over?

You know it was an entertaining interview when the comic satirizing it isn’t as funny as what actually went on…but it’s pretty damn close. That poor girl…she never stood a chance in a room 1,000 geeks strong.
Fail.

How do you win back audiences? I wrote a post on that (link on my name). In this case, think the basics of social media and web 2.0.
Transparency: tell us the back story on the situation, admit there are problems with the interview, solicit feedback, from the audience (before and during the interview), and never insult your audience. Never. If you do, apologize swiftly and sincerely, adding humor helps too.
People were excited about this interview. Speakers too often project their own fears and confusion on to the audience, when a mirror is a more useful tool.
