Google for Good: Google Darfur Mapping.

March 14th, 2008 by andyhunter

Ben Rigby of mobilevoter.org shared a stunning example during his SXSW 2008 Book Author session that warranted a separate conversation.  Demonstrating the power of social media to drive political action and reform, he used this Google Earth map as an example:

googleearthdafur.jpg

A project of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, this is simply one draw dropping example that demonstrates visually the vast extent of human violence in the Darfur region with markers of ongoing violience and destruction of villages.  Using de-classified satellite images from the State Departement, photos from photographers worldwide, personal stories, and data from the UN this is just one of many visual representations of the devastation.

Though a very different tool and somewhat different topic, this is reminiscent of  Hans Rosling’s work at Gapminder (also a google affiliated project).

So simple, yet a stunning example that dimensionalizes the impact of these goings-on in a way you just dont get in a newspaper.  For more US Holocaust Memorial Museum mapping initiatives visit here:
