Get Serious: Alternate Reality+Transmedia Brand Campaigns

Just bumped into this full case study today while pulling together a presentation and had to share… The Dark Knight “Why So Serious” campaign by 42 Entertainment.

While this isn’t new news, it’s an example I’ve used many times to show the depth that online media, social engagement and intrigue can take to promote an entertainment property or brand.  And in my opinion it is a prime example of where digital branding is headed.

This is an incredibly difficult type of campaign to construct, concept and a “slow burn” to build up participation. But, it’s probably the best example I’ve seen to date (other than Nike+) that shows how immersive transmedia content, social media+community, advertising and interactive media can be the key pieces to build a brand in a fragmented media landscape.

..and remember this was created over 2 years ago.

download the case study here and a comprehensive outline of strategy here.

I loved this campaign. I was so annoyed when I found out the I Believe in Harvey Dent crew hit Boston on a day when I was out of town, but I still managed to track down a couple of the newspapers. One of these days I’ll find one of the buttons!

The last couple of slides in the presentation are a little awkward, as it’s impossible to evaluate exactly how much value the ARG added to the buzz surrounding an already fiercely-anticipated release, but the campaign as a whole remains a thing of beauty, and – as you noted – an ideal case study of how audience engagement, social media, transmedia storytelling and transmedia branding/planning are going to be reshaping experiences in general. Thanks for sharing!
